Beth is a computer science student at the University of Cambridge. She has been involved with Effective Altruism, a growing social movement based on the idea of using evidence to figure out how to do the most good, founding an EA society at her high school. She believes that steering the development of technologies such as synthetic biology and artificial intelligence is a high-impact area to focus on. She co-wrote a policy paper on ‘Navigating AI Development’ last year with student thinktank The Wilberforce Society and this year founded a new student society at Cambridge, ‘Future of Sentience’, focusing on how to steer technological development wisely. She is a very un-stereotypical computer scientist as she doesn’t play video games and loves the outdoors!
